AIDS in Zambia

Poverty and AIDS control the lives of the Zambian people. Over the last few years, the average life expectancy has decreased to 34 years. Famine, malnutrition and undernourishment have weakened the immune system of the people and their resistance to malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. 25 % of the Zambian people living in urban areas and 20 % of the rural population suffer from AIDS.

The Swiss priest Ernst Wildi lives in Kalingalinga, a slum area of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. He looks after sick and dying people, helps to set up a hospice for AIDS patients and tries to raise the people’s awareness. In 2002 Father Wildi appeared in the Swiss TV programme «QUER» and a documentary film on his work was shown.

«Street Kids» in Zambia

In spite of the democratic government, corruption and mismanagement have plunged Zambia into poverty. Illnesses, diseases and fanaticism amongst the people make the situation even worse. Two thirds of the approximately 9 million inhabitants live in absolute poverty. Most of them struggle to ensure their daily meals.

The social project «Street Kids» in the capital Lusaka supports children whose parents have died of diseases like tuberculosis, AIDS, etc. Children between 5 and 18 years are given the opportunity to live in the «drop-in-centre» and to be educated in a school, which shall enable them to live their own lives once they have grown up. The project shall also prevent the children from becoming criminals.
