PCBs in «open systems»

Environmentally hazardous substances are common in public and private buildings. Approximately 40 % of the sealants that were installed in Switzerland and other European countries between 1955 and 1980 do contain Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs).

Not only sealants but also paints and corrosion protection coatings are often contaminated by PCBs. Such paints have been applied to surfaces in buildings, machines, pressure pipes and phone-posts. PCBs the «wonder product» of the 60s and 70s can be found practically everywhere.

Owing to their technical characteristics, PCBs have been showing a lasting quality. So they are still posing problems and dangers nowadays. Many repair works and renovations are due in the near future, in the building industry and with regard to pipes especially. However, the owners and/or contractors are often unaware of the PCB contamination and as a matter of fact the possible problems are not addressed in good time.

PCB containing materials in buildings can pose a potential health hazard if people are exposed to them (i.e. by inhaling PCB contaminated indoor air) over a long period. PCBs have a chronic effect, so the concerned people do not usually notice any symptoms. People are particularly at risk if PCBs are exposed to heat and/or fires. In such cases the highly toxic substances dioxin and furan can be formed and released.
